That may sound like a strange statement, but it’s true…nobody on earth has the qualifications necessary to be an atheist. Consider what it takes to be an atheist.
An atheist is someone who believes there is no God. How does one know that there is no God? He doesn’t…he just believes this through a leap of faith. In order for an atheist to believe this with 100% certainty, he would have to:
1) be all knowing. He would have to know everything there is to know, in order to claim there is no God. We all know that human intelligence is limited. Nobody on earth knows everything
2) be present everywhere. How would he know that there is no “God” in another galaxy? He would have to be there to see that there is no God there, or anywhere else.
These are traits that are known as omniscience and omnipresence, which the God of the Bible has. There is no possible way for a human to possess these. Why then are some people atheists?
You can be an atheist, only because you have made a choice that there is no God, without solid proof of such belief. This makes you no different that Christians…we both take leaps of faith to believe.
Can I prove to an atheist beyond a shadow of a doubt that God exists, using the Bible and science? No, I can’t. If you believe in God, you are making a leap of faith. I know God’s existence is true in my heart, because of the inner working by the Holy Spirit and my personal experiences. However, each of us has different experiences, thus we have a multiplicity of choices among men.
If you are searching for rock-solid proof of God’s existence, you won’t find it. Many say that they see it in the intelligent design of the universe. I agree, but there will always be someone out there who will argue the points with you.
Think of it this way…if I had unmistakable proof that God exists, then you would have no choice but to believe it. This would be contrary to God’s gift to us, known as free will. You may choose to believe in God, or not…but if you had no choice, there would be no free will.
The bottom line is that you must choose for yourself. If you are searching for God, I urge you to continue your search. If you are an atheist, and you have been turned off to the church because of what you see as their unrealistic stance on creation science, take heart. For years, young earth creationists have said the earth is young, despite all the evidence to the contrary. They are mistaken in their interpretation of key passages of scripture, which leads them to this faulty position. Properly interpreted, there is no problem with believing in an old earth, and in God. Unfortunately, they have garnered too much attention…you know how the saying goes…”the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” They have been outspoken for a long time. The church is now trying to right this error.
I urge you to continue your research into God, and determine for yourself what you believe is the truth. If you are looking for evidence that shows that the earth is not young, we have articles on this website which confronts the falsehoods of young earth creationism head-on. Feel free to browse around, and may you find what you are looking for.
If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
